Vocational Major

The VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) is a two-year senior secondary program designed for students who are interested in practical, applied learning with clear pathways to further vocational training and employment. It replaced the previous VCAL program and is now an accredited senior pathway within the VCE.

Why choose VCE VM?

The VCE VM is ideal for students who prefer a hands-on, real-world approach to learning. It equips students with skills and experiences that prepare them for apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE, employment, or alternative university entry pathways that do not require an ATAR. Students who thrive in applied settings and want to develop both career-focused and community-based skills find this pathway highly rewarding.

What the program offers

Students who choose VCE VM engage in:

  • Core studies: Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills, and Work-Related Skills.
  • VET qualifications: Delivered in partnership with TAFE or other providers, aligned to each student’s vocational interests.
  • Structured Workplace Learning (SWL): Regular placements with employers that build on classroom knowledge and provide real industry experience.
  • Community engagement projects: Opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society while developing teamwork, leadership, and employability skills.

Together, these components provide a balanced program that supports students in building both life skills and employability skills, ensuring they are prepared for the next stage of their career journey.

Assessment & Completion

Assessment in the VCE VM focuses on the development of skills and competencies rather than exams. On successful completion, students receive:

  • The VCE certificate(reflecting their two years of study), and
  • A vocational certificate recognising their achievements through VET/TAFE.

This combination provides both senior secondary credentials and industry-recognised qualifications.

The Selection Process

Students wishing to undertake the VCE VM pathway must apply through the Senior Sub-School Team. To be eligible, students are expected to:

  • Be enrolled in a VET qualification as part of their VCE VM program.
  • Arrange and participate in Structured Workplace Learning with an employer.
  • Actively engage in all learning activities and community projects.

As representatives of the College in community settings, VCE VM students are also expected to uphold and demonstrate the College Values in all aspects of their learning.
