The DVC Library is a space that promotes literacy, student engagement, and a positive school environment.
The library has a collection of over 6000 items in a range of formats: fiction, non-fiction, biographies, manga and graphic novels, picture books, and magazines. The collection is designed with the students as the focus, and student input is a key factor in obtaining new resources.
We place a large emphasis on literacy and reading advisory, and we endeavour to find a book for every student. Reading is such an important skill to have and we believe that making it accessible and fun is a great way to foster a love of reading, which in turn builds the student’s strength in the skill.
Other than promoting reading and literacy, we also have a focus on student engagement, and on creating a community space for students. We’re open at lunchtime for students to read, play boardgames, or chat with their friends. There are also clubs that run out of the library, and these are run for the students, and at the request of the students. The clubs change depending on the cohort and student interest, but some of the clubs we run include Pride Club, Book Club, Chess Club, and LEGO Club.
We host English classes in the library, assisting teachers with selecting books for students and having a space where students can explore different types of literature and entertainment. We also support English classes by providing resources such as Audiobooks, reference materials, and resources. There are also a larger number of I.T resources that are available for loan from the library to students and staff, such as keyboards, projectors, adapters, loan laptops, and we have a charging station where students can charge their BYOD laptops if they’ve forgotten their charger.
At the DVC Library we want to provide an inclusive environment where students can engage with the school and each other, a space created with student input, and a place where students can explore and enjoy reading.
