Year 10 marks the final year of middle school and serves as a crucial transition point before students enter senior school. It is a year focused on exploration, preparation, and decision-making, as students begin to consider their future academic and career pathways. With a strong emphasis on personal development, responsibility, and goal-setting, the programs offered in Year 10 are designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for the next stage of their educational journey.
At this stage, we establish the foundations to support students as they transition to VCE/VM or alternative pathways. It is a key year where students are encouraged to expand their thinking, explore their interests, and take ownership of their learning. With guidance from staff, students set clear goals and develop greater independence through intentional subject selection and personalised pathway planning.
Pathways Exploration
Year 10 is a pivotal time for students to continue the exploration of future pathways. Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of career development experiences. There are designed to broaden their understanding of life beyond school, develop the competencies they will need to navigate their way in an ever changing employment and educational landscape, whilst helping them make informed decisions about their next steps. These opportunities include visits to TAFE and University campuses and career expos, as well as classroom based learning activities. These programs provide valuable insights into the pathway opportunities available whilst fostering student agency in the decision making process.
Work Experience
Year 10 students participate in a structured work experience program, giving them the opportunity to explore potential career paths, develop workplace competencies, and gain insight into real-world work environments. This hands-on experience helps students make informed decisions about their future studies and career aspirations.
Transition Interviews
As part of the Year 10 program, students and their families participate in Transition Interviews which is a culmination of their exploratory endeavours in preparation for the move into senior school. These three way conferences provide a supportive space to discuss each student’s strengths, interests, and goals. Transition Interviews also offer an opportunity to explore future pathways—whether VCE, VCE VM, or other post-school options—and help families make informed decisions aligned with both academic potential and career aspirations. By involving families in this process, students develop agency for their learning journey and confidently step into the next stage of their education.
Exams
Students undertake formal exams in both mid-year and end-of-year periods. These exams serve several key purposes. They provide valuable practice in exam conditions, helping students build confidence and develop effective test-taking strategies. They also give teachers and students clear insight into academic progress, highlighting strengths and identifying areas needing improvement. This feedback is critical for guiding subject choices for senior school and shaping future learning goals. Importantly, these assessments foster resilience, personal responsibility, and the ability to manage pressure—skills that are essential for success in senior secondary education and beyond.
Curriculum
The core Year 10 subjects are English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science and Humanities. In addition to these, students can select from a wide range of electives, allowing them to pursue their interests, develop new skills, and explore potential pathways for future study.
Personal Development Learning
In the Junior and Middle Subschools, all students participate in a Personal Development Learning subject. In Year 10, the PDL subject is Aspire.
