Students at Diamond Valley College begin their exploration of careers and pathways from Year 7. Students are encouraged and supported as they continue this journey throughout their schooling, developing their capacity to negotiate their way through an ever-changing world.
Students from Year 7 to 10 engage in explorations through Become Career Education. The program is focused on self-knowledge and agency; and aims to help the students to make stronger connections between their schooling and their own futures. One of the key tenants of the program is you “Can’t be what you can’t see”, with the program highlighting for the students the vast array of occupations our students can strive for. This exploration culminates in Year 10 with students, parents and teachers conducting a transition interview in which the student presents their plan for the next two years of their school.
Career Development
The Career Development program is structured around the central philosophy that we are not preparing the students for a single occupational outcome, but rather we are helping to develop the skills and competencies they will need in the face of an ever-evolving world. A central theme being that “we move forward with intention, but remain open to unexpected turns in the road”
Work Experience
Students have two opportunities to participate in our work experience program. There is a two-week block at the end of Year 9, followed in Year 10 with single week. Students are encouraged to utilise these opportunities to experiment and explore options. Students gain an opportunity to develop workplace competencies, as well consider their pathway options. In the senior years via the Vocational Major students can engage further in the world of work via Structured Workplace Learning.
Pathways
Students at Diamond Valley College are supported in their journey and provided with opportunities to explore their options, and take their opportunities. Our students are supported in their transition to either University, Vocational Education, or full-time employment. Student and families are encouraged to meet for careers and pathway meetings from Year 7 to 12, and beyond, in support of individual pathway journeys.
