Books and Reading

Library Collections (Print):

At the DVC Library we place a huge importance on reading. We are very keen to encourage and foster a life-long love of books in our students. This means that we work hard at making the Library's environment stimulating as well as welcoming. During the recent Library redevelopment, it was decided to construct a dedicated reading area. This is a quiet place where students can sit on couches or in beanbags, in class groups or individually, and choose from the surrounding fiction and magazine collection.

Book Club

One of the Library's initiatives, aimed to get students talking to their peers and sharing information about their favourite books, is the weekly Book Club meeting.

This meeting takes place on Tuesday's during lunchtime in the Library. Although it is always attended by a Librarian, the focus of the discussion is on what students are currently reading and enjoying. Students can use this forum to ask us to purchase new books for the Library collection. We also use this opportunity to showcase new items that may be of interest to the students.

New members are always welcome and refreshments are provided

The Library's Book Collections

Fiction collection - Includes novels, picture books and short stories that are not real.  They are shelved alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's surname.  e.g. Morris Gleitzman’s books will be shelved under GLE.

The library holds a large range of genres to suit all tastes and reading levels including crime/mystery, fantasy, humour, science fiction, romance and more.  They are available for a two week loan and have special stickers on their spines to make them easily identifiable.

Non-fiction books - these are books with facts and provide students with information to assist students with their assignments in all subjects.  They are shelved in Dewey number order, so that books about one topic are generally shelved together.  Most of these are available for a two week loan.

Reference Collection - these are books with facts, and generally include encyclopaedias, yearbooks, dictionaries, atlases and other books with statistics and factual information.  Reference items are not for loan and have a Reference sticker on the spine.

Magazines - the Library subscribes to a number of academic and recreational magazines including New Scientist, Bulletin, Dolly and Street Machine.  These are available for overnight loan only.

Daily Newspapers - the Library receives daily copies of The Herald Sun and The Age.  Back issues of each of these are kept for 3 months.  These are not available for loan.

Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge:
Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge banner

From January each year, the Premier of Victoria challenges students in Year 7 to Year 9 to read at least 15 books before the end of August.  The Library is great supporter of this scheme and this year saw 12 students successfully complete the challenge.  Students' achievements are celebrated through the presentation of certificates, signed by the Premier, and the publication of their names in the Sunday Age.

The Library also hands out its own certificates to those students who have read 10 or more books during the period January to August 2007.  A special congratulations must go out to to Tristan Pilley who read a fantastic 34 books during the Reading Challenge.  Great stuff Tristan!

Review a Book

The Library takes a great interest in what our students are currently reading and enjoying.  Spread the word about your favourite new author or book by sending us a review by email or drop a hard copy off at the Loan's Desk. We will publish these on our website as well as in the DVC School Bulletin.

Literature Links

Below you will find a range of links to various web sites that will be a help of interest if you want to find out more about a particular book or to get an idea about something new to read. If you know of a great website that isn't listed here, don't keep it a secret. Let one of the Library staff know and we will add it to the list.
